“Susan and Leslie’s warm & welcoming teaching style helped me do something a little scary in each class which made me a better player.”
“Great teachers. They make the class at ease to learn and totally make mistakes to grow. they make it fun.”
“I believe they masterfully represent the Wernick Method in a manner that will certainly foster the growth of individual players, but more importantly, will encourage the growth of thriving jam sessions throughout the region.”
“Leslie and Susan have a chemistry that allows individuals of all backgrounds and skill levels to gain valuable knowledge and practical skills through bluegrass. In many ways, while I’ve improved greatly on my music, I feel I’ve grown even more in my ability to navigate and understand the culture and history of bluegrass, as well. The two provide a welcoming, encouraging environment through which community is being built in a new and exciting way. Thanks to Leslie and Susan!”
“Leslie has strong jam leadership skills. I always benefit from jamming with her. She has a very calming and positive energy which informs her interactions with other jammers. She articulates clear, encouraging ideas for improvement when I’ve felt awkward or self-conscious about my performance and skills.”
“Susan and Leslie are excellent teachers. It is obvious they care about the learner and they provide positive and encouraging instruction at the level of understanding and ability of the learner.”
“Susan is always helpful and approachable and makes sure everybody is included.”
“The most enjoyable learning experience I have ever had.”
“Susan West and Leslie Dare are the best group music instructors I’ve ever experienced. I went from feeling nervous / uncomfortable about taking breaks and improvising, to feeling confident and capable.”
“I’ve gotta tell you…you ladies are excellent teachers/mentors! You are so clear and so encouraging and supportive. You have honed and organized this series of jam classes wonderfully. Even though I’ve been jamming awhile and have the basics, I’m actually sorry I had to miss the first 3 classes. I always learn something from you!”
“I am new to jamming, and this team plugged me in with the essentials right away. They are all about the joy of playing and everyone having fun, sharing and learning from each other. At my first jam with them, there were other players more in tune with jamming and more skilled. Because of Les and Susan, I still felt right at home. I even tried to break and sing a solo, which I have never done. They create a comfortable, safe haven for budding Bluegrass musicians to thrive.”
“Thank you for encouraging me to explore, go out on a limb and providing a safe environment to do so, especially for one who had no previous musical experience. I have come to realize that you just have to do it, and I look forward to attending future seasons to make me a better jam musician (and continuing to have fun doing it!)”
“Other jam leaders have made me feel intimidated; Susan has such an encouraging approach, and you sense that anything is possible.”
“I feel so much better equipped to jam now. Y’all are the best!”
“Leslie and Susan were so organized and helpful. They do a great job of gently urging a student to try something new. I learned a lot and had a great time.”
“Susan West and Leslie Dare are both excellent musicians and teachers. They are knowledgeable about bluegrass in general and about playing in jams in particular. They care about tradition and about sharing with others. I’ve been in jams and workshops with both and have been impressed with their ability to help others learn and grow. They are exceptional human beings in general and always caring in their interactions with others.”
“Leslie and Susan were instrumental in my participation in the Wernick Jam camps. I credit my attendance at three different jam camps with helping me grow in my ability to play mandolin as well as my confidence in participating in open jams. Both of these ladies have been an encouragement to me in my involvement.”
“Susan is a positive, encouraging, and kind teacher who has a love for the music.”
“Leslie is a talented, welcoming leader who makes jamming fun for everyone, regardless of their level of proficiency.”
“Leslie presents clearly, in an organized, understandable way.”
