Stoney Mountain West Virginia

A recording of Jim and Jesse performing this song from 1988 popped up on my Facebook feed several months ago, and I saved it. I ran across it again this morning, and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. Best I can tell, Buck Owens wrote this song and released it as the B side of a single in 1974. His recording is, of course, traditional country. There is a Stony (no “e”) Mountain in West Virginia, in Hampshire County (a county I’ve never heard of, and I’m from West Virginia!), which is in the northeast panhandle. And there is a Stoney Mountain Overlook Road in Sherman, WV.

Jim and Jesse covered it on their “In The Tradition” album in 1987, and I much prefer this bluegrass version.
